This page is a bit embryonic right now but I have plenty of things I will be putting on here (and linking from other pages) in due course which will be valuable to other organisational professionals.

Support resources for independent consultants

Out of Organisations. I really like the idea of this web site set up to support people taking the step to work outside conventional organisational employment. It offers advice, resources and coaching support to independent consultants and other workers and seeks to help activate a network community a bit like we had in mind when we set up meta-network. Set up by Jonathan Males of Performance1.

There are plenty of associations and professional bodies that you might consider joining, depending upon your specialisation and interests. I am a member of AMED (The Association for Management Education and Development), which also gives you access to discounted professional indemnity insurance. They produce a very good quarterly journal called Organisations and People, however they are a bit too focused on the management training and development role and don't really cater for all organisational consultants, which is a bit of a shame.

I would also advise independents to join Linked-in as a means of networking and making new contacts. You will likely find that there are already people you know on this network who can invite you to join.

Education, training and development provision

Everyone now seems to be running Masters/diploma programmes in things like organisational consulting, organisational development or change management, as well as short course training programmes for consultants and coaches, but I get the impression they can be of variable quality. Obviously based upon my own experience (with the MSc CASS at Surrey) but also from talking to graduates of other courses, I would always start by looking at:

Surrey University's "MSc in Change Agent Skills and Strategies"

Ashridge Business School's "MSc in Organisational Consulting" and their other courses

Roffey Park's "MSc in Organisational Development" along with their other shorter courses

These all have very good reputations and all offer something slightly different. I gained enormous value from taking the CASS MSc at Surrey and would recommend it highly, with the caveat that some key personnel may have changed since I took the course.

Miscellaneous other courses for organisational consultants that may be worth exploring include:

(to be added)

Personality, leadership and team profiling tools

I have lots of links to useful on-line tools which I will add in the near future.
